Good for the NHL giving Getzlaf a $10,000 fine, I'm embarrassed that he used to be a Hitmen player. He should be suspended for two games, similar to what happened with Kevin Pillar this week for a similar situation.

I didn't say he shouldn't have been punished. I would like the league to spend more time on the on ice product and consistency of officiating.

2 games for a heated remark?? Get over yourself. Of all the things that have happened in these playoffs you want a 2 game suspension over name calling. Spearing, dives, cross checks to heads, punching in faces. No suspension. Heated remark. 2 games!! Facepalm.

Consistency of officiating? LOL
The Ducks are lucky where they are right now since so many calls have gone in their favour, which have been blatant screw ups by the officials. Enjoy the last two-three games of the season.

Last time I looked we had freedom of speech. I'm getting so sick of the thought/word police making issue of such things in the heat of battle. The words we use say more about the character of a man then anything else but one has the right to say them no matter how offending it may be. I grew up in an era where if tacky language were used we dealt with it. I guess the snowflake generation is upon us!
I share your concern about Tommy Lasorda Ed, he's a good man!

A lot of us are disappointed that Getzlaf used to play in Calgary. But based on the 'naughty word' he said (which does not rhyme with maggot like Pillar's did), I find it hard to see how the two are comparable. Totally inappropriate? Yeah, especially if he said it about a referee as opposed to saying it to a referee about another player. Worthy of a fine? Maybe, but given all the f-bombs and worse that drop during a typical NHL game I think that's questionable unless he said it about a referee. Worthy of the firestorm it has created? Hell no!

We've got one of the best playoff series in years, and an injury situation in Nashville that has created a possible David vs Goliath story, and today everyone is talking about Ryan Getzlaf's potty mouth. What's wrong with this picture?

As much as I am a Ducks fan, Getzlaf deserves a suspension for his comment the other night. If it's good enough for Shaw a year ago, it's good enough for Getzlaf now. And don't give me this freedom of speech nonsense. There are some things you don't say and that was one of them. I'm very disappointed in him. Don't care if it was the heat of the moment.

The skippers comments notwithstanding - wrong & ignorant yes ... worthy of suspension ?? not for me to say - learn and grow -

Tonight cannot let RJ absence effect the effort or desire - pound these guys hard - keep the penalties in check and let the D shine thru - Go Ducks -

Was the exact same word said, and was the exact same word also said to the ref? That matters. If not, then the SAME punishment isn't warranted.

I too am sick to the PC culture. Everybody has their feelings hurt. Get over it. Maybe everybody should be awarded the Stanley Cup so nobody is upset over losing. Pathetic.

Leave it to a Kings fan to confuse the NHL with the federal government. Freedom of speech is granted by the government, and protects us from the government. Your employer can punish you for your speech, especially for your speech at work. Go yell something similar at your boss or a coworker during the work day and see if you have your prized freedom of speech.

That said, this should not have been any more than a fine. The NHL didn't horribly overreact. Getz had better watch himself.

ARH777, we can find common ground on Tom Lasorda. I love that man.

Been on both ends there. Difference is nobody was a tattletale about it. Now, when I was in management, that's a different story. But co-workers in a heated moment, nothing was ever done.

Son, freedom of speech is granted by the Constitution. I understand that companies have an obligation to keep the peace in a work environment. That being said nobody should be fined because some pansy ass can't take a little heated verbage. If it's a ref that heard it then ignore it and move on. We all fall short. People lose their jobs for opinions and bad choice of words. That's BS in my view. On to hockey....Good luck!

If it was what the camera picked up (c***s*****) then that's not even an anti-homosexual thing. Much ado about nothing. If it was something worse than that, fine.

I'm 99% sure it is exactly that, which is absolute BS.

Can't recall or find any other footage where he says anything borderline homophobic.

Putting an athlete on blast for homophobia if all he said is banana eater than the NHL really should be ashamed.

You forgot the Oilers fan too, but anyways Getzlaf should've been suspended, he's make millions a year and he's supposed to be a role model.

I was talking to my ducks fan buddy. And Im of the thought that he got the fine mostly because it was against an official. And the league really has to make sure that abuse of the officials is in check. I think if he said what he had said to another player and nobody heard it other than the player. I dont think anything would have happened.

I think the issue is saying it towards another male is what makes it viewed as homophobic.
